Beauty Influencer’s Sunday Column Vol.5: Hyped Product I Regret Buying

Hi everyone,

I hope you are having a great Sunday. I don't want to interrupt Faces of Spring Guest Blogger Series but I just remembered that I forgot to publish this week's Beauty Influencer's Sunday Column, so here it is. This week the question was more "critical". I hope you enjoy it. I am loving the wonderful posts and the discussions on the Faces of Spring Series, although I can't join it all that much due to limited internet access. Right after BISC I will publish today's post.

I got a little sick during the holidays and trying to keep up with all the cosmetics, skin care hauls while keeping my sore throat at bay by constant green tea and Miso Soup consumption. Two more days in Tokyo and we have to leave *sigh*. It went so fast.

BISC Vol.5

What was the last product you bought because of the hype and now regret?

BISC Vol.5 Authors

LILY | Malaysia | Chloe Ash

The Armani Eyes To Kill Mascara. So many people say this is THE mascara to gorgeous lashes, but it did absolutely nothing on me. It was very disappointing because I had high hopes for it. I guess I just have to stick with what works. Dior and Estee Lauder work well on my lashes. Clinique Power Lash is great and some Japanese drugstore ones work much better. It was an expensive mistake though.

They were a great deal, but I really regret buying The Body Shop’s Body Sorbet moisturizers. Everyone always says they’re the best thing ever, but they leave my skin feeling sort of… powdery? And tacky. My only other hype-haul this year has been for ColorPop eyeshadows, though, and they more than made up for it!

SARA | Germany | Color Me Loud

I feel like it is part of my blogger duties to hunt down hyped products before others and review them so I end up making mistakes very often. Last three products which disappointed me were:

    • YSL 10 color eye palettes (reviewed here): These had very cheap looking linear shimmer, almost like drug store quality, plus fall out.
    • By Terry Eye Designer Palette in Color Design (reviewed here): The colors looked very vibrant in the pan. Instead they turned out to be very soft and muted, also they fade on me.
    • Giorgio Armani Runway Nail Polish (swatched here): It costed more than the regular nail polishes but is almost the same as their regular one called Incense Velvet.

AGATA | USA | Her and Makeup

This is the hardest question so far! I thought about it for days, I went through my makeup stash a few times and I can’t find one thing that would fit the criteria. I am normally not a very spontaneous buyer and I do a little research before buying makeup, especially if it’s more expensive. Don’t get me wrong- I bought makeup because of a hype (Urban Decay Naked palettes, Hourglass blushes) but none of these products disappointed me.

JAA | Thailand | Hello Jaa

Clarins Instant Eye Makeup Remover! It does a good job at removing waterproof and long-wear eye makeup but that’s about it. I don’t like the scent (strong and unpleasant), nor the greasy residue it leaves behind. I just don’t get the rave reviews at all. I have to always follow up with a separate cleanser to get rid of the oily film.

  3. Sorry to hear you're sick, get well soon!!
My mistakes: Lancôme dolls eye mascara: not working for me, not enough impact
And I've got three bobbi brown eye shadow that I don' like. Wrong shades for me. Bought to quickly. And I gues I'm the only person in the world who is not a very big fan of the Guerlain Meteorites. To much glow, can't use it on my T-zone.

  4. Bobbi Brown sparkle gel liner and eyeshadow. It looked beautiful when first applied, but as the day wore on, little bits of glitter began to migrate. I love shimmer and grown up fairy dust like Tom Ford's "celestial" shadows, but the Bobbi Brown just looked messy :-( I was terribly disappointed as the warm burnished brown was a really pretty color--especially for warm green eyes like mine. Oh, well. . .

  5. Hi Eileen,
I was considering to try sparkle gel liner. Now that you say it, it was maybe good that I didn't. I have Urban Decay's sparkly eye liners. These do stay in place, but they have very funky colors. I apply then over another eye liner. Have you tried them out?
I have only one Bobbi Brown Sparkly eye shadow and it performs just fine. It is a copper shade. I think it is close to the one from Cognac Sable. I didn't have any issues with that one so far. Which base do you use?

  6. Oh thanks. I am coughing a little today, lol, still trying to make the best out of the holidays.
Lancôme doll eyes didn't work on me either. Mascara though is a very individualistic thing. A friend says something works, I try it doesn't work on me. So I guess all you can do is to hunt for mini mascaras to find out if it works without splurging.

  11. Hi Sara,

Yes, I used UD in the past, but being a much older woman, I find many of their colors to be somewhat garish and so I just skip UD for liners and eyeshadows at this stage in life :-) As for Bobbi's regular gel liners, I have a few of those: black, espresso, and graphite shimmer and have no problem with those. It was just her newer glitter liner/shadow that was a fail because of the glitter migration. I used to use Kanebo Sensai eyeshadow base on my dry lids, but I no longer use a dedicated eye base or face primer because the physical sunscreen I get from my dermatologist (I have mild rosacea), also acts as a primer and is perfectly safe to use in the eye area. By the way, I really like the eye pencils by Three. I picked them up when I was in Tokyo last year. They're shimmer rather than glitter and they wear very well on my eyes.

  13. Oh poor thing feeling sick on holidays!! I hope you get better soon, I really want to hear all about your trip and see what you hauled!!
This was a very interesting question, there are always things that are hyped although I'm a bit like Agata in the sense that I read a lot of reviews before so I'm not usually let down!
Have a great time in the last days!!
    xx
