Tom Ford Lip Color Matte #05 Plum Lush and #10 Black Dahlia for Holiday 2014 Collection, Review, Swatches, Comparison & FOTD

I hope you are all having a great weekend. Today I woke up early to get the only MAC pigment kit I was missing from Breuninger, the bronze one. Oh good make-up lord, why do you make it so complicated. I went there early just to hear that Bronze set was an online exclusive. I dragged myself through the city to overcome my sorrow and ended up buying some boots and books. When I came home a beyond deer friend offered me to send hers, yay! I love happy endings.

Social Media is shaking with the news of mini Tom Ford lipsticks which will be released in 50 limited editions shades online for one single day, then these will eventually make it to stores as well. After I learn more about the availability of these in Germany, I will let you know. At the moment, it seems to be US and Selfridges (UK) release. Needless to say I have already made my list, hah!

Back to the subject shall we? Today it is about my ever growing Tom Ford lipstick collection and two more mattes to present. Check out my previous reviews of Pink Tease, First Time and Pussycat. And let me introduce you to Tom Ford Lip Color Matte #05 Plum Lush and #10 Black Dahlia.

Tom Ford Lip Color Matte #05 Plum Lush and #10 Black Dahlia

Tom Ford Lip Color Matte #05 Plum Lush is a mid-toned pink with a slight hint of plum. It is one of the most comfortable shades of the range. It is not drying and stays for a long time even after eating if I apply it with a lip brush, blot and apply again. Although it is very pigmented and dense, it is very wearable. I love this shade and found myself wearing it over and over again during the last weeks. For lovely close up lip swatches, check out this post from Anonymiss.

Here is how it looks on me. It pulls quiet pink but not too cool. I would even go as far as saying it is almost natural since it pulls a tad red too. On the eyes I am wearing MAC Electric Cool Eye Shadow in Highly Charged and Tom Ford Wicked on the cheeks. I like the modern crash of red pullover with pink lips but not my very tired looking smile (it must have been a Friday) what do you think?

FOTD with Tom Ford Lip Color Matte #05 Plum Lush

One of the most talked lipsticks of the line must have been Tom Ford Lip Color Matte #10 Black Dahlia. It is a limited edition shade together with First Kiss and its name pays a tribute to the famous discontinued Tom Ford lipstick Black Orchid. Ah Tom Ford why, why discontinued that legendary shade. Good news though, you will see how close they are if you check the comparison swatches right after the jump. Black Dahlia is a deep blackened berry/plum with red undertones. It is the most beautiful shade to me in the whole line but unfortunately also the most drying one. It is of course very tricky to find a smooth applying vamp, especially as matte. For Black Dahlia to work, you have to make sure that you moisturize your lips appropriately before application.

You have seen me wearing it at my latest Hourglass post. I have wrongly stated then that I was wearing Plum Lush but I edited the post and corrected the mistake. I combine Black Orchid also with Wicked on the cheeks the below look.

On a side note, I am wearing a lovely t-shirt which was sent by Likoli (not affiliated), they have super fun stuff and they deliver worldwide. I washed it and it survived. I don't like wearing men t-shirt cuts but they have a more feminine Odetta model which I really like.

As for the comparisons, you can see that I love my vamps. Closest to Tom Ford Black Dahlia is Black Orchid, which is a tad less red/cooler. MAC Lingering Kiss is deeper, MAC Sin is close but warmer/more brown. MAC Fashion Revival is between Plum Lush and Black Dahlia. Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet L'Impatiente is cooler. Tom Ford Lip Color Matte #05 Plum Lush is warmer and lighter than MAC Fashion Revival. It is also warmer than Tom Ford Aphrodisiac

Final thoughts: Both Plum Lush and Black Dahlia are very beautiful shades. I prefer the formula of Plum Lush and find it also more wearable. As lovely as Black Dahlia is, the lips need to be prepped to make it work. Plum Lush is permanent and Black Dahlia is limited edition.

Price/Availability information for Germany: Each lipstick costs around 47€ and will be available soon. They will be sold only at KaDeWe Berlin, Karstadt Oberpollinger Munich and Breuninger in Dusseldorf. You can call and reserve under 030/21916397 and 089/29024166. (Information was provided by PR, I have no affiliation with these places.)

I would love to know, matte lip yes or no?

  1. They are booth beautiful lipsticks, but Plum Lush is definitely the best on you. It is the one that I would choose to wear too. I haven't tried the TF lipsticks. How is the smell? Some lipsticks are so smelly that it is impossible to wear them.

    1. Hi Eleanor, Plum Lush is one of my favorite lipsticks at the moment.
They have a nice smell, nothing too strong. I can get it when I smell the bullet but not after I apply it. That said if you are particularly sensitive to smell, these may not be for you.

  2. Hi Sara! I have Black Dahlia. Is a gorgeous quite complex shade but have the same issue. Dry and unforgiving. How do you prep your lips to make it work? What do you use?

    1. I don't have very dry lips but Black Dahlia is drying on me. I would put lot of lip balm and wait for it to sink before applying this one. I have to yet find a better way too, let me know if you do before me ;-) This shade is so gorgeous, it is worth the extra effort.

    2. What I have been doing is to scrub my lips with a tooth brush... Moisturize with a matte lip balm (using an organic one that found at my local health store)... Remove it partially and then apply the lipstick. Bloat it, and reapply. Then after few hours, to re apply it, first I apply the lip balm over the remnant of what I applied already... Use some paper to remove it all (old lipstick and lip balm) and then apply Black Dahlia again.
The result is less drying matte, far more 'elastic' and comfortable. It is a gorgeous shade, so it is worth the hassle. Though it is dark, it doesn't wash me out or anything.

  5. Hi Sara! I have Black Dahlia too and I was disappointed at how difficult it was to work with. I moisturize my lips with loads of 8 hour cream overnight but Black Dahlia picked up on every imperfection. I also found it smudged around when I tried to use a lip brush. I will say the shade is GORGEOUS, so I have just resigned myself to wearing it as a stain.

    1. As a stain, it works quiet good. You are right though it is very unforgiving. I don't have dry lips to start with but still it applies unevenly. Which lip brush are you using? I am ucing a Chikuhodo one and it works good with this. I think the key is the shape of the lip brush. Square ones are better.

    2. Hey Sara, I've been wondering if the Chikuhodo lip brush is better, I have the Wayne Goss 07 which I've heard can be used as a lip brush but I've never tried it, and a couple from Real Techniques. I'm so not a lipstick brush person lol, but I have been considering the Chikuhodo for awhile now. Do you recommend the Z-7 or the GSN-16? I'm leaning towards the Z-7!

  6. I'm a very frequent Selfridges visitor (I practically live there actually) - and every time I have to close my eyes when I pass the Tom Ford counter. Yes, close my eyes because you can't exactly look the other way because you are SURROUNDED! They're just so expensive, and even as a high end beauty lover I find it hard to put that much money down for a lipstick.. But Black Dahlia looks absolutely beautiful! I might have to have a peek and a swatch next time.. Sehr schöne! ;)

    1. Hi Silke, how lucky of you to be so close to Selfridges. You have to be very careful, Tom Ford lipsticks are addictive and they are very expensive. Have you heard the buzz though, they will release some minis for almost half the price. They should also be available at Selfridges, so make sure to check that one out to try a few shades you might like.

  7. I adore Plum Lush and was surprised at how quickly it became my go to shade for evening. I guess I was good and ready for autumn's rich plums and berries. On me Plum Lush applies true to bullet color-- "What you see is what you get." At my age (70), I seldom wear mattes, but I've made a huge exception for Plum Lush. Applied over a cushion of ByTerry Baume de Rose, it remains comfortable throughout the evening and does not dry or irritate my lips. I wonder if Plum Lush is going to be one of the minis TF will be releasing in his Lips and Boys collection. I understand there will be a few of his current mattes in the collection. Fifty shades of TF goodness from which to choose has me dizzy with anticipation :-)

    1. Hi Eileen, I always think of you when I put on Plum Lush. On me everything looks a bit too bright, I don't know why. I can imagine on you Plum Lush shows its full beauty if it looks as in the bullet. I hope I will be able to pull off these shades also for the years to come. This post lists the lipsticks, together with the mapping to the existing shades, I don't see Plum Lush at the first glance:

which of the shades are you eyeing. My list is so huge, I need help!

  8. How is it that Black Dahlia is red on almost everyone I see? I didn't get it as I thought it's really close to Black Orchid, but the latter is a deep burgundy on me! Hmm... this is a mystery I must get to the bottom of!

Btw, I left another comment earlier using my Google account by accident, just in case you think it's some other random stalker! ;P

    1. LOL, I haven't gotten the other comment so I think it is all fine. Black Dahlia might be a bit too purple on me, on me everything looks very purple, I am blaming my green undertones, :-P

  9. Wow, Plum Lush looks stunning on you! And the combination with that green eyeshadow on the lower lid is amazing! I have to try it too next time wearing Plum Lush
Thank you for mentioning my review :*

    1. You have very sharp eyes, seeing that small "detail" along the lower lash line. I love combining electric purple and green liner.

  10. Plum Lush has converted me to matte lipsticks which I usually avoid like the plague but this is so wearable (with Chanel's new No19 Red nail polish!) I love that it lasts, at the very least as a vivid stain for hours even with my endless coffee drinking. Susan, London

    Liebste Grüße
