Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette #056 Bar from Fall 2014 Collection, Swatch, Review & FOTD

Today I have a true beauty for you. When I have seen the promo pictures, I must have gasped. It is the classical smokey eye palette which has something modern about it. I am talking about one of the five new Dior Palettes from Fall 2014 Collection, #056 Bar.

Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette #056 Bar

Grey, taupe and a light pink combined with black and white. All in all it pulls cool but not icy cool. The center taupe shade balances the grey, black and white. The end result doesn't clash with my natural to slightly warm complexion.

Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette #056 Bar

#056 Bar is the one with most natural tones among the five fall palettes. Carre Bleu (reviewed here) is a palette of blues, Pied-de-Poule has dark tones of gold and khaki, Trafalgar is the burgundy and bronze palette, of which I am very much excited about. There is also a pastel-leaning pink palette called Tutu which is an interesting selection for a Fall Collection. These are now all available at Nordstrom.

Close-up: Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette #056 Bar

#56 Bar is composed of the following shades:

Top left: A mid-toned grey taupe with satin finish. This makes a nice case color if you want to go for some drama. For a day look, you might opt for using it on its own. It has nice quality and great color pay-off.

Top right: A cool white with frosty finish. This one is nice for highlighting the inner corner or, if used very lightly, it can be used for highlighting the brow bone. It is no secret that I don't prefer frost finishes and I don't think I will reach for this one very frequently.

Center: A light to mid-toned shimmering neutral taupe. It is my favorite shade in this palette. The shimmer in that one is not too much, it just gives enough dimension to it. I like using it as a base color all over the lid. This shade is very smooth to touch and it is very pigmented.

Bottom right: A very deep brown black with matte finish. Dior nailed it with this shade, it has great color pay-off and great for both lining or defining the eyes. It is a little drier than the satin or shimmery shades, which is great because it doesn't produce fall-out. Thumbs-up!

Bottom left: A very light pink, which swatches almost like an off-white. It has shimmery finish, not as frosty as the white one, which I like. I just wished though it show a little more of its pink, like seen in the compact.I was a little disappointed after swatching that one and finding out it is not true to pan but on the eye look, it combined beautifully with the other shades.

Swatch with studio light: Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette #056 Bar

Before I show you the results of my first date with #056 Bar, I would like to compare the old and the new quints and point out the differences.

  • New quads are sleeker. The look more chic while the save place.
  • CD Logo on the frost cover of old quints, which could only be seen with light is not there any more. Although I liked this effect of the old palettes, this really doesn't bother me. I think I am ready to sacrifice this effect for a sleeker result.
  • The metal lining around the edges is now a little lower.
  • Opening/closing  mechanism stays unchanged.
  • At the back of the quad, now there is a tiny picture showing the shades, which I find to be very useful to get a grasp of it before opening.
  •  Both compacts have 6 g/0.21 Oz of product, so the size remains unchanged.
  •  Once you open the compacts, you see that the initials of Christian Dior, the letters C and D embossed on the center shade are designed again. The new letters appear to be closer to one another in the new palettes. This gives the illusion that the eye shadows are smaller, but they are exactly the same.
  • One of the sponge tipped applicator that comes in the compact has now a tiny brush on one side.

I also included the ingredients of the new and the old quints. As far as I am concerned the new releases are not new formulations but only new shades in new compact. If you know more about it please leave a commend below. Both new and old quads have talc and silicone and they don't have parabens.

Here is my first attemp in a smokey eye using #056 Bar. You can see the pink on the inner corner, taupe all over the lid, grey on outer corner which I then intensified with black. I used Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Demolition for this look on top lash line and bottom water line. I thought black would be too harsh and I wanted to keep the softness of this look.

Below you can see the resulting look using Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette #056 Bar on the eyes, Dior My Lady Glowing Blush in pink (coral one was reviewed here) on the cheeks and MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Quiet the Thing (reviewed here) on the lips.

FOTD with Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette #056 Bar

Here is another photo of the super pretty new palette, Dior #056 Bar. I must have taken hundred of photos of this one...

Final thoughts: A lovely modern take-on classical smokey eye, #056 Bar is one of the five palettes Dior released for this fall. It is pigmented and smooth and easy to work with. Only if the pink shade would pull more pink, it might have been one of my all time favorites.

All five of the palettes are now available in Nordstrom for those of you who are in US, for the rest of us, we have to be more patient until the mid of August.

Is true-to-pan important for you or you wouldn't care how the shadows look as long as they perform good?

    1. New one is slimmer, which is also good in terms of "less bulkiness" and "better storage" but that CD logo was really nice. I think it is more important that the formulation is nice. :-) I hope you like Bar too!

  3. Oh, true to pan is quite important to me. I'm not good enough to be able to remember what the color really looks like once it's applied. Certainly not if there's more than one or two of them in my collection.

    1. You are right in terms of poor memory issue. Not only this but also I would love to remember which shades perform better, which look good but I always forget and sometimes I can't create the looks as nice as the first ones.

  4. Wow that pink is almost unrecognizable as a swatch! I think I will pass as much as I like the taupe colors. Also, I don't think I will be able to resist the new Chanel Quads :-O I want the green one and the one with that blue shade for now that you reviewed. I have too many neutral palettes I don't use (Naked 1, 2, Narscisst, thBalm Nudetube and Lorac Pro), I always reach for the colorful palettes! LOL

BTW I did pick up sundeck after a month of debating and I LOVE it.

  7. It looks positively gorgeous but those two top chades are a deal breaker for me. I never use white and the grey is kinda meh for me but I agree with you, putting a taupe in there is smart! As usual the look you did is super pretty! :)

    1. Hi Helene,
you also don't like grey? I am so meh about grey but the one in here somehow works. Probably it is the taupe working and grey hiding but still ;-))
