By Terry Eye Designer Palette #2 Color Design, Review, Swatch & FOTD

I would like to shout out loud TGIF but when I think about everything needed to be done and postponed to the weekend or next week, I am like, let's not shout out too loud. How is with you, are you happy that it is finally weekend?

I mentioned about how I ended up with both of the By Terry Eye Designer Palettes, here, when I reviewed Smoky Nude Palette a few days ago. Smoky Nude gives me that cool but not too grey mauve smoky eye which I am loving with a few of my favorite strong lippies at the moment so I ended up reaching for it quiet often. I noticed though after 6-7 hours my eye lids looked more bare than anything else but I couldn't quiet put my finger on it since the shades are nude and the colors are close to my skin tone. I was feeling the shades don't crease and stay strong but they fade a bit.

For three consecutive days I am putting By Terry Eye Designer Palette #2 Color Design into test and here are my thoughts.

By Terry Eye Designer Palette #2 Color Design

When I opened the lid, I was like "wow look at these colors!". Isn't that beautiful? With the thought of creating all kinds of cool warm combinations, my mind got wild. Color Design and me, we could sleep together that night if I could kick hubby out of the bed.

You can read more about the packaging in my previous post, so here I am jumping directly to the shades.

By Terry Eye Designer Palette #2 Color Design

The finishes in this palette have more lustre in them compared to Smoky Nude which was focusing more on matte textures. Almost all the shades are satin with more or less shimmer degrees and none of the shades are really shimmery, frosty nor metallic. This is good news because if these vibrant shades would be frosty, I wouldn't get it close to my eye balls.

Top row consist of five cool toned satin shades:

Left most: A deep navy grey with satin finish and very subtle shimmer. If you look at the pan, you might expect to get more blue but you get more of a grey hue on my skin tone.

Left: A mid toned lilac with satin finish. This one looks like blue in the pan but ends up swatching lilac, more like what you would expect from the shade to the right of it. I really liked it upon swatching.

Middle: A light cool lilac/pink with satin finish. It also swatches much lighter than it looks in the pan.

Right: A very light neutral pink with satin to shimmery finish, again lighter than in the pan.

Right most: A very light cool pink with satin to shimmery finish. This one had the worse color pay-off during swatching and I had to apply it many layers to get the shade show up.

Bottom row has gorgeous warm neutrals and a vibrant orange as well as a yellow.

Left most: a very deep neutral brown with satin finish. This shade is great to be applied to define the look and it is true to pan.

Left: A gorgeous mid-toned copper with gold shimmery finish. This shade is also more true to pan and it is beautiful applied on the eyes.

Middle: A very light cool yellow with satin to shimmery finish. This is another shade which looks more vibrant in the pan and doesn't apply so.

Right: A mid-toned peach with shimmery finish. This is also much lighter than in the pan. A lovely shade though.

Right most: This is the only matte in the palette, a vibrant mid-toned orange, which looks even more vibrant once swatched. Love that one, it is really a nice surprise thrown in there.

The first look I tried was one of my favorites for this spring, orange & pink combination. It is inspired by this swoon-worthy lovely palette of Suqqu, #18 Sakuraori. I thought the shades are close so I can try to recreate a similar look. Please check out that post to see the eye look and compare it with the one below. It took me over 20 minutes to get the shades show up. They are now soft hazy shades, they apply beautifully but after application in 2 minutes the vibrancy is gone and I reapply. This game went on like this for about 20 minutes to half an hour. I ended up applying over 5 layers to achieve the look below and it looks nothing like the one with beyong gorgeous Sakuraori. Dear Terry but maybe you should order yourself a Suqqu palette and see how it applies.

I was not all that disappointed but thought maybe I should give it a second chance. So I wanted to go for a lilac & yellow eye. Gosh, this took me over half an hour. I apply the yellow, it looks stunning, then in 2 minutes it turns into a beige. Then I try to build some purple and lilac, no way. Try to define the crease, no chance because although these are sheer, they don't layer all that well. Here is the resulting look which looked like this after various layering and it looked like just a wash of colour after 2-3 hours.

Final thoughts: My thoughts? The colors look gorgeous in the pan, swatch a little different than they look but it is fine but what about it fading away on my lids? Is it because of my primer (Nars Pro-prime) or the chemistry of my eye lids? Difficult to tell, all I know is that money is wasted. I wished I could return this one because I don't think I ever have so much time and patience to wear it again. But, there is always a but... If you like a quick wash of color without getting too colorful, here you go. This is the palette you were dreaming of.

How important is "true to pan" for you? I see that I get confused if they don't look the same as they apply and the eye look doesn't turn out the way I like it to be.

  1. These shades look lovely but it's such a shame that they fade so fast. I only have maximum 20-30 minutes to apply all of my makeup so it's definitely a pass for me. Thank you for the review.

  2. Such a shame. I really like the four color on the left. I'm not that fussed about the color in the pan vs color on the lid. Pass it on to someone who'll love it.

  3. Too bad that the colours aren't so bold and true on the skin- they look like perfection in the pan!

  4. Never more glad for the weekend than after this awful week. I was very interested to read this review and so sorry that it didn't turn out well for you - especially those purples/lilacs. I am finding the smokey nudes are quite subtle on the lids (and I need to pack on quite a bit) but they do last well over S5 cream eyeshadow as a base (I nearly always use a cream shadow as a primer on my eyes). I applied at about 5.30am today and only the under eye lining with the brown has gone awol by 8pm. So I don't mind the lack of pigmentation in the nudes for a work look - although I do realise how Tom Ford centric I have become when I am looking for the metallic or glitter to do a pop in the centre of the lid!! 5. Whoa, I was thinking this palette is super vibrant. So sorry to hear it doesn't even offer a sheer wash of color! What a shame!

  6. Too bad. I was waiting on these two palettes before preordering Nude Dip. If the cool colors of the nude palette had measured up, this was the right color range for me and Nude Dip is warmer than what I wear, but I might chance it. Because of the miserable weather I have not made it over the store to swatch. What a shame-- the prime reason that I return an eye palette is because of disappearing mattes so this is a no for me.

  7. Honestly, being over 55 I would love to have this palette, i'm known to use different color Mac paintpots to make the colors pop if needed, but I don't wear bold looks any longer.... gotta stay age appropriate!

  8. Oh, I'm so sad :( The colors are SO gorgeously vibrant in the pan, but they swatch differently, you have to pack it on top of primer and it still fades? Definite skip for me. Thanks for the warning.

  9. I'd prefer that the colours swatch just as beautifully as they look in the pan. These look amazing but I only like the bottom row. Also, it's a pity they turn out sheer. Looks a bit muddy too, the cooler shades :-(

  10. that's totally disappointing! a true pan is definitely VERY important to me. I can forgive if an indigo blue looks more violet or lilac when swatched because you know, those borderline shades may look different according to skintone, but colour disappearing is NOT an OPTION specially for high end brands. I mean by Terry is not precisely drugstore makeup :/ this is so confusing and frustrating :(

  11. Hey Sara, thanks for the review! This palette is very interesting, I love the design on the eyeshadows :)xx

  12. Hi Gainorie,
I am glad that it was helpful. I love the design too, just needed a bit more pigment in there ;-)

  13. Hi Nati,
I used to say that pan is not important but ended up picking up the middle shade from top row instead of the left shade to it because I though that is too deep. In the morning my mind doesn't work properly and I am lucky when I can find the brushes, let alone my eye shadows. Then I can't remember details such as "that eye shadow applied lighter than it is " lol, I am sure you can relate ;-)
I know color disappearing is a real issue. I don't know how these would look on a white base. I might try it one day.

  14. You are right unfortunately muddy, If you check that eye look with Suqqu, it becomes clear that there are miles in between the formulas. It is always a bit unfair to compare something to Suqqu though, since they all fail haha.

  15. Hi Katherine
I know, yes it still fades on Nars Pro-prime. I will try to apply them on a white base though but fading is an issue that is hard to avoid. I believe my dry eye lids also have a role in that.

  16. Hi Lily,
I know what you mean. Sometimes we opt for softer shades. But you wear color so beautifully, judging from your photo. And... Let me tell you, if you wouldn't tell you are above 55, none of us would have guessed that.

  17. Hi Alison,
Nude Dip is also a tad warmer for me. I wished they brought Enchanted back, which was way better than Nude Dip, sigh. Yes fading is something we should all avoid. Smoky Nude fades a little too but not as much as Color design, so you can still check that one out.

  18. LOL, yes I know, once you see the photo you are like, now a clown look comes hahaha. But then comes these super soft eye looks, isn't it so confusing?

  19. Hi Susan,
I am actually quiet happy with Smoky Nude palette although it also fades a little, it is fine. I like the color selection too. I don't use a cream eye shadow as a base because I have dry lids and those dry them out more. My lids are also more pigmented than the rest of my face so If I would pick up a lighter shade as base, a cream eye shadow, it might look better indeed. I will try to find one which is not too dry. LOL to Tom Ford centric haha. I also used to enjoy mattes more before he came into my life and whispered "get your glam on girl" to my ear. ;-)

  20. Hi Jane,
don't be sorry really. with or without you I would order it lol,
It is interesting that there are borders to how much color we can tolerate. On my eyes, I can go all clowny and it looks neutral on me but on my lips if I wear something bright, I am washed out in a second. Then I need blush to bright back a bit of my color, which then makes me look like a clown hahaha. If you are fare, I am sure can also wear pastels and these are nice soft without being too much pastel, so I can understand you like them. Xox

  21. Hi Jess,
yes I am thinking the same. That yellow looks like medium toned, then after the swatch it is almost like a highlighter shade. The indigo on top swatches like a purple applies like a pink. Now thanks. I have the same problem with some Dior Quints. They look so vibrant in the pan, they swatch like tones of white hahaha.

  22. I know, that pan, just to watch, it is perfection :-)

  23. Hi Gosia,
yes I think I should do that. I find a fair lady who is not too much into smoky eyes and she might love it.

  24. Hi Anne,
I have to be quick in the mornings too. No way I can spend more than 30 min to makeup and all the looks here on the blog is done within this time frame lol. I am glad that it was helpful.

  25. Sara, you break all color theories for me. I am cool toned, you are rather warm toned (if pictures don't lie), but Nude Dip suits me more than Enchanted. Why everything must be so difficult in makeup :)

  26. What you say reminds me about the color types. I think that brightness of lipstick and its darkness correlates with how contrasted our color type is. I am very contrasted with black hair and light skin, so I can only wear very bright lipsticks, nudes of all kinds and undertones make me look sick and 20 years older, even if I create intense smokey eyes. Bright dark neon fuchsia/magenta lipstick is my nude. You are less contrasted so in order to wear a bright lipstick you need to create more contrast on your face first. For me to wear nude lips I need to skip blush altogether and apply darker foundation, to lower my natural contrast. Eyeshadows' color however depend more on skin tone and how colorful our eyes are. Mines are also green, but dark green. I can still play with colors, but they must be muted because of my skin tone. Your eyes are more colorful and skin is slightly more tanned, so you need something more intense than taupe. Perhaps, some shimmery muted colors can still be an option as shimmer itself creates more attention that matte and makes any eye color stand out more.

  27. Wow, the hand swatches look so pretty. I am sorry they apply so sheer to the eyes. That is really disappointing, especially coming from such a high end brand!

  28. Hi Sara, sorry to hear this one didn't perform up to expectations! I actually did not have problems with the pink shade on the top right, and I thought it was a pretty fun palette. But of course, I had initially thought this would one turn clown-ish on me.... hahahaa.

  30. Wow - wish I had seen your review BEFORE I bought this palette for $96! It just arrived in the mail today. I'm hoping that my primer (UD) does a better job of holding a bit more color. I don't mind if some of the color is less vibrant but I do expect it to show up!
