Chanel Les 4 Ombres #226 Tissé Rivoli, Swatches, Comparison & FOTD

Summary of the previous episodes
Spring of 2014, Chanel has recently reformulated their eye shadow quads and released eight new combinations. The day they arrived in Germany, Sara went for a big swatch party at the counter. Then returned home with two of her favorite quads and a long wish list. Love would be an understatement, she was head over heels with the first quad she tried, #232 Tissé Vénitien . This magically doubled the number of her quads to four. In this episode, she is going to try the second quad, a natural one with gorgeous shimmer, #226 Tissé Rivoli.

Chanel Les 4 Ombres #226 Tissé Rivoli

Since the first time I touched #226 Tissé Rivoli, I can't forget about the texture of the shade on top left corner. This one is a cooler take on natural with subtle, not over the top fine multi-colored shimmer with some serious dimension going on.

All Tisse Eyeshadow Quads are so pretty to look at since their surface are made to resemble the texture of a Chanel Tweed Jacket. This is why they reflect the light in a gorgeous way.

I have taken almost a hundred photos, trying to capture how pretty the shimmer of the top left shade is but I couldn't come remotely close to what it looks like in person. Here are two of my tried with studio light and under afternoon sun.

The shades are mostly natural to cool with exception of the darkest shade which is a warmer brown. They are all creamy, soft to touch and very pigmented. I haven't experienced any fall out with these either, the only problem I had was the urge to resist applying top left shade all over the lid (and rest of my face) because it is pretty! But at the same time, this shade is rather dark and takes over the lid space, muting the other gorgeousness, but if this is what it takes, be it! In this recent look, I had it all over my lid. Today just for the purpose of demonstration, I applied the lightest shade on the inner corner, golden rose taupe (bottom left) on the middle blended into darker taupe (top left) on the outer lid. I defined the crease and outer corner further with the darkest shade (deep warm brown, bottom right).

#226 Tissé Rivoli is a taupe lover's dream and I really like the fact that it is not too warm. It should work on a wide range of complexions.

FOTD: Chanel Les 4 Ombres #226 Tissé Rivoli

I checked my stash to see what would be the closest match from recent releases. I was (not) surprised to find out that one of my other all time favorite Chanel quad came close to Tissé Rivoli...

Comparison Chanel Les 4 Ombres #226 Tissé Rivoli vs. #39 Raffinement

Chanel Les 4 Ombres #39 Raffinement is a warmer and less complex version of Tissé Rivoli. These are close but not dupes. Raffinement has some gold/bronze tones while Rivoli leans more rose/taupe. For my complexion, I prefer Rivoli over Raffinement. At the moment Raffinement is available in US but it is mostly sold out in Germany.

Final thoughts: I am not going to rave about how much I love the new formulation of Chanel again. If you want to invest in a quad which you will use often, if you like taupe, if you want to try Chanel's new formula on a safe and natural palette,  I recommend checking out Tissé Rivoli.

Taupe or beige? Which is your favorite?

  1. Oh yeah, I most probably need this one! It's hard to choose between taupe and beige, but I might have to go with taupe for the moment!

    1. Yes probably everyone needs one Rivoli for everyday easy on eye kind of looks. I would also select taupe but on you they both look awesome xox

  2. I picked up Venitiene and Gabrielle a couple of weeks ago and was looking to go for a neutral option next... your post may have just swayed the vote! I absolutely love Raffinement so I think Rivoli will be right up my alley :)

    1. I am sure your mother will love that one as much as we do, and yes I do that too, I buy for my mother and end up stealing it from her. She is always very generous and when I want something, more than happy to give them to me :-)

    1. Yay for another taupe lover :-))
This one would look fabolous on almost everyone I think, these shades are very natural, not leaning strong in any direction so a winner in my book too.

    1. Yes me too. It is not too shimmery, not frosty at all, just a little fine shimmer which makes it not boring but still natural.

  8. Thanks for the comparison swatch with Raffinement, Sara. It's immediately obvious how much better the new quads are in terms of texture and pigmentation!!!

    1. This is right, once they are put side by side, you see the big improvement.
Are these already released in SG? Did you have time to play with them?

  9. Between yourself and Sunny I'm considering very much buying a palette just to try to figure out why they don't work for me and really take the tme to make them work for me (dry, because I think they'll perform well wet). So I'm going to need some help in choosing. I'm intrigued by Gabrielle, and really liked the plummy shade - it was the only shade that lived up to my expectations when I applied it on a colleague. But That in turn might be too similar to taupe of the moment - Smoky Plum from Clarins? Btw, I asked at a course, it's permanent. That said, it might be the most unique of the ones I'm considering.
Then there's Mademoiselle and Rivoli, You can't go wrong with neutrals - that is unless you have umpteen shades already, and Mademoiselle applied very sheer on my lids, and only stood out in being so very plain that anyone should be able to make it work. Help?

    1. Hi Siri,
I am not sure if you are supposed to use them wet. I was told that the old formula could be used wet but these not. I really like Gabrielle but if I was to choose just one, it would be Rivoli or Venetien. That said I am also loving Camelia at the moment. I am wearing it today. But help me a little. Do you like cooler toned quads? What is your favorite color?

      Delete
    2. Camelia isn't available here. I just supposed they could be used wet. Venetien is gorgeous but not something I'd use very often, I'm afraid. I'm fortunate in that I seem to be able to pull off both cooler and warmer tones. That said, going by the state of my Naked palettes, I'm partial to cooler shades, and in particular taupes :)

  10. I bought this quad first-and now I own two more. I wholeheartedly blame you Sara ;-)

  11. First I had to have Ventien I love it especially the beautiful green colour. Then I decided I need Vendome because of the goregous peachy/apricot shade. I thougt I could skip Rivoli because it was a dupe for Raffinement but after reading this I was not sure anymore so I tried it in the store and wow you are so right this is the uprade version of Raffinment, its not a dupe, applies much easier, has better pigmentation and stays on longer! So you understand I had to get this one as well and so glad I did. This is my second favorite one know, first is still Ventien! Thanks for posting this lovely review Sara! Hope to read more Chanel in the near future!

    1. Hi Nawi,
yes my favorite quad must also be Venitien, because of that gorgeous metallic shade that I love so much but Rivoli is also breath taking, I am so happy that you decided for it :-)

  12. I've seen top left colour in person - trust me I know EXACTLY what you mean. It is breathtaking.

  13. I love Rivoli also but is the beautiful shimmering taupe/plum similar to Gris-Gris or Fauve?
