Chanel Les 4 Ombres #234 Poésie from États Poétiques Collection for Fall 2014, Review, Swatches & FOTD

First it was chanel.com exclusive, then a store exclusive in the States. Dear Chanel lovers will be delighted to hear that now it is a part of Fall 2014 Collection États Poétiques around the world. I was chasing it when it is first released, was about to click order at chanel.com and it got disappeared at that moment! Then reappeared, I was excited and ordered it, just to get an e-mail that my order was canceled later that day. I have seen prices going rocket high at eBay and had to smile because it was apparent from an early auction back in May that this palette would make it eventually to Europe. Yay! Here it is.

Chanel Les 4 Ombres #234 Poésie

If you read my glowing reviews about the permanent Chanel quads then you know how much I love the new formula of Chanel. Poésie is no exception, it is buttery, creamy, pigmented and blends like a dream. It also has very complex shimmer for the metallic shades. Once the shades are matte, they are never too dry and perform wonderfully.

Chanel Les 4 Ombres #234 Poésie

Back to Poésie...Did someone said matte? satin? no no no, this is a shimmery quad. From light to dark, it has the beautiful complex shimmer I was talking about. The lightest shade is the only satin one which balances things out a bit and can be used under brow bone without going old fashioned. I also used this shade to blend the crease for a soft transition.

Bottom right: A very deep shimmery eggplant with lovely complex shimmer. This one is also dark enough applied alone or on other shades so without a doubt it will give you as much drama as needed.

Top left: A mid-toned warm shimmering taupe, which is the star of the show. It makes this palette neutral and warms it a little so that it is flattering across different undertones. This shade also has very complex shimmer.

Top right: A very light ivory with very subtle shimmer. This is the balance shade of the palette to make things more day appropriate if needed.

Bottom left: A very light neutral frosty pink. This shade is not that frosty and looks nice as a highlight on the inner corner. I used it for this purpose and found out that it didn't emphasize the fine lines.

Below you can see my eye make-up from today, the products used are:

  • Chanel Les 4 Ombres #234 Poésie: light pink inner corner, taupe on the lid, eggplant on the crease, ivory to blend out the crease.
  • Nars Proprime to prime the lids
  • Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof #906 Marron Glace along upper lash line
  • Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof #89 Or Rose along the lower waterline.
  • Rouge Bunny Rouge Witchery Mascara

FOTD, look in context: Chanel Les 4 Ombres #234 Poésie on the eyes and Guerlain Kiss Kiss Rosy Boop lipstick on the lips.

All in all, I like Poésie but I am having a hard time to understand all the hype around this product. It does give a nice polished look and it is hard to overdo, which is probably a good thing. But for my satin matte loving heart this one is way too shimmery across the board and therefore lacks a bit of versatility. It is pretty, very pretty indeed but it is not my favorite of this line. Actually I would easily prefer Rivoli, Vendome and Venitien to Poésie. Lucky me that former are permanent.

Final thoughts: Poésie is a lovely seasonal palette for those of you who like shimmering neutrals. It is limited edition and now released outside of US. In US, I am hearing that it is rather hard to find at the moment.

Tell me what the hype is about? Is Poésie just a pretty name?

  1. Definitely a pretty fall quad (and very nice on you!), but I'm with you- much tempted by some of the others :)

hi sara! i was at my local chanel counter the end of july when i saw poesie on a display unit. mystic eyes was the quad in the fall collection there. the sales associate really enticed me to purchase poesie. i really funny though about purchasing color when it's not part of a complete collection. i guess i'm so used to purchasing eye, lip and cheek all together from the same collection. and, i'm not very good at coordinating colors by myself as i'm a bit color "blind". so, after purchasing poesie i needed a new blush and lippie. i just had coral colors from the summer. the sales associate suggested rouge coco shine in boy and a blush that's been around for a long time....can't remember the name. i wanted something new. anyway, i wound up returning poesie. i'm still undecided if that was a good choice. however after looking at your FOTD and that pretty guerlain lipstick, i'm thinking maybe i should try to see if i can repurchase it. could you please tell me what blush color you are wearing? xoxo wendy. p.s. thankyou for the information about the laura mercier "eye sticks". i had the same kind of issue with chanel's. i guess i pressed down too hard applying them because i had to go back 3 times to replace moonriver.

    1. Hi there Wendy,
I didn't not down what I was wearing on the cheeks but I believe it is Chanel JC Innocence, the blush from Fall Collection which goes perfect with Guerlain Rosy Boop. Three new Chanel blushes, Rose Glacier, Jersey and Innocence are all wonderful. I have heard that Poesie is sold out in USA but you can try to find it again. I don't think I would wear this one with very cheerful blush either. Chanel Boy is a great nude, my all time favorite. Oh and I never had breaking issue with LM caviar sticks before but all three that I ordr have te same crack at the same place, I believe it is a quality issue.

  3. I hear you. Don't know what the hype is about either. Perhaps, the improvement of the texture is something we can all say "FINALLY!" but while the shades are lovely, they're not that unique.

    1. The improvement of the texture is definitely great but there are 8 quads out there with the same texture and more creative shade combinations. I believe this one is fool proof and limited edition, this is why it gets the credit.

  4. You look so pretty!! I've been reaching for Poesie a lot since I got it, very wearable and easy to use, perfect for a lazy person like me. I have to agree that Poesie wouldn't be my favourite of the new quads (Venetien remains my #1), so perhaps the hype comes from being an LE?

    1. LOL you mean it is a lazy day quad ;-) LE definitely plays a role!

  5. Actually I don't love it myself but for whatever it's worth I think it looks nicer on you than some of the others.

  6. Ok, now, have you been reading my mind Sara? confess!!! LOL This paragraph "All in all, I like Poésie but..." it is exactely what I think about this palette. I'm glad I am not the only one, that really makes me feel I'm not the odd one out here. Pretty, but not for me, thanks.

    1. LOL, yes I was like concentrating and your mind said "no Poesie for Natalia!" ;-))
I think you enjoy a little more challenge and you do great eye make-up with more interesting shades, so saving your money for something more interesting makes sense!

  7. Dear Sara,

once more a great review with wonderful swatches and an amazing FOTD (I love the lipstick!). Thank you!
I received my "Poesie" on monday and have been playing with it ever since. I have to confess that at first, I wasn't sure about buying it but looking at some reviews and knowing that it is a LE made me order it. I guess that is what the hype is for me about - the thought that it could be sold out too soon and that I would regret it later (happened before - way too often ;-)
I am surprised by how much I like this eyeshadow (I know all the other comments before me weren't that excited). Today I used it a little bit the way Mary Greenwell used Tisse Gabrielle on Youtube and I really love it :-)
To sum it up: I am happy that I bought it :-)
I hope you have a great thursday.
    xoxo Stephanie

    1. Hi Stephanie,
I am glad to hear that you enjoy it. I enjoy it too, wore it two times this week and it looked nice and polished. It is not totally unique but a neutral done right, so I can understand that you liked it :-)

  8. I like it, definitely! But there's a but for me as well. I feel that it's not unique or exciting enough for me to get for myself.

  9. Hi Sara,

Yup, I knew it! You and I have pretty similar tastes! This was the only quad I picked up because of all the hype and the limited edition status. I think it's okay, certainly nothing to write home about. I'm actually a little disappointed in it. The lighter shades are lovely, but they practically blend right into my super fair skin, so the only shades that show up are the taupe and the dark plum. The taupe kind of washes me out because it's quite warm on me, so I'm left with the dark plum, which I absolutely LOVE! $60+ for two shades, one of which I don't really like alone, is not worth it to me. Lovely shimmer, but I'm loving some of the other quads more.

  10. That one is definitely not for me, it does look good but I can't see myself doing a look with these shades only. Combined with other more matte maybe but not on its own. I like those cooler tones on you! :)
