Dior Vernis #206 Pied-de-Poule, #796 Carre Bleu and #853 Massai from Fall/Winter 2014 Make-up Collection, Review, Swatch & Comparison

I hope everyone is having a great start in the week. I might have worked too hard during the first two days or I must be totally confused because I just wished a colleague who works four days a week "a nice weekend"! This was when I recognized that there are three more days, ugh...

Before I start with the beauties of today, I just would like to remind you that I am hosting my first give-away ever, so please go check it out if you haven't joined yet. It is so much fun that I suspect a new one is on its way! I have enjoyed reading the comments so much, got some new ideas and a lot of motivation. Huge thanks to everyone who left them.

Lovely Dior gel-effect formula that I am loving to bits! *happy sigh* I have reviewed some of them previously here (Part 1) and here (Part 2). Part 3 is also coming very soon. Today I would like to review two of the four limited edition shades coming up for this Fall and also show you a quick swatch of a repromote from their permanent line.

The new shades are called #206 Pied-de-Poule and #796 Carre Bleu.

Dior Vernis #206 Pied-de-Poule and #796 Carre Bleu from Fall/Winter 2014 Make-up Collection

A gorgeous mid-toned nude with slightest hint of lilac is called after the famous pattern (a.k.a. Houndstooth) which was used to design Chriastian Dior's best seller suits. Check out this picture from 1950, and you know what I mean.

#206 Pied-de-Poule is a great nude, not too dark not too light, very flaterring due to its natural undertones. It is opaque in two coats, has the long wear time of their new gel-effect formula. Pied-de-Poule is a true cream. It also appears warmer or cooler depending on the light, therefore I have two swatches for you.

I pulled out some of my favorite nude nail polishes for a comparison. I love nudes which are not too yellow nor too dark and Pied-de-Poule exactly fits the bill.

Dior #403 Palais de Royal (reviewed here) from the permanent collection is darker. It is great because I am loving it but I was wishing for one, which is close but lighter. Burberry #103 Ash Rose (reviewed here) is one of my all time favs, which is slightly lighter. Giorgio Armani #103 Parma Greige has more lavender and #104 Greige is darker (both are reviewed previously here).

Tom Ford Sugar Dune (reviewed here) is lighter and more pink. Chanel #559 Frenzy is warmer, I was really not expecting the latter!

Dior #306 Gris Trianon is cooler and darker. The closest shade in my stash is YSL #39 Beige Gallery (reviewed here) which is a little cooler but they are really close. So I would say, you might want to skip Pied-de-Poule if you own Beige Gallery already. However if you missed Beige Gallery, I recommend that you don't miss this opportunity twice! ;-)

Dior #796 Carre Bleu is a deep night blue with secret silver shimmer which only reveals itself under a strong light. Before I tell you what I think about the color, I would like to mention that the consistency is very good, longevity is au par with other nail polishes from gel-effect range, so it is rather impressive. Carre Bleu is also self levelling and a dream to work with.

The shade... It must be my all time favorite dark blue nail polish! It is not too dark and at the same time it has this understated beauty, a chic and professional aura. It is a great alternative to black without being black nor blackened. This one is pure love for me and I can see myself wearing it often after the summer is over.

I would like to show you some comparison swatches and you will understand why I liked Carre-Bleu so much. Those are a few dark blue nail polishes from my stash...

Dior #607 Blue Denim (disc.), Chanel #553 Blue Rebel and Chanel Magic (disc., reviewed here) are all lighter and brighter.(see?)

Dior #908 Tuxedo (disc.) is more metallic, Chanel #461 Blue Satin is darker and has more of a metallic finish. Dior #900 Poison Blue (disc.) leans more purple and is darker.

Chanel #631 Orage from this year's collection didn't move me much if you remember the post about this one, because to me it rather looks like another black. If you would like to choose only one dark blue polish this year, I would recommend you getting Dior's Carre Bleu instead.

The closest shade I have in my collection is Giorgio Armani's #701 Bleu d'Armani (swatched here), which is another blue I love wearing. I would say it is a little bit deeper. I think if you have one, you don't need the other but if you will pick only one, go for Dior #796 Carre Bleu since you get more product for your money.

There is also a repromote shade #853 Massai, which is also reformulated and included in the permanent line. In the pictures I have seen that they slightly changed the name and called it Red Massai, which is a little confusing but as long as the number stays the same, don't worry, they are exactly the same shades. This one is also a stunning burgundy red with great formula and cream finish. Below swatch is with two coats.

Final thoughts: A lovely natural mid-toned taupe nude and a stunning midnight blue which is not too deep nor too bright. I can't wait for the Fall to come. Wait a minute, it is so rainy at the moment here, I might consider to wear one of them tonight!

  1. Oh hey, I'm liking Pied-de-Poule! I was thinking I'd get Palais Royale eventually, but I might prefer Pied-de-Poule! Thanks for the swatches and comparisons, Sara!

    1. Hi Sunny,
I also prefer Pied-de-Poule. It is less dark so shows itself more and looks so classy :-)
Hope you will enjoy it too. :-*

  2. You have such a beautiful collection of nudes! I love those nude greige shades, too! With just the right balance of tones (not too yellow as you mentioned), they are such easy sophisticated shades!

    1. Hi Belly,
I wished that collection would be only of nudes :-P
Yes nude Greige shades, especially mushroomy ones are also my favs. I find them to be more modern than beige and more flattering.

  3. Pied-de-Poule does in no way stop me from wanting Palais Royal. I say gimme both! Your nail wheel comparison has created even more wants for my wishlist because it seems I can NEVER have enough nudy taupish colours!

    1. LOL Rach, this is the downside of comparisons. Usually I compare something and som readers end up purchasing the ones which are used in comparison as opposed to the shade which was compared ;-))
You are right, nude and taupe, so classy and never enough!

    2. Dior will be the death of my budget. This Vernis Gel Shine has created a monster. I get along rather well with most polish brushes but this new one is the easiest thing in the world. I put Junon on today and as I was applying my usual favourite (non Dior) top coat all I could think was THIS top coat (that I usually adore) does not have the Dior Vernis Gel Shine brush of awesomeness. OMG WHY DO ALL BOTTLES OF NAIL POLISH NOT HAVE THE DIOR VERNIS GEL SHINE BRUSH OF AWESOMENESS?!?!?!?
I don't think I'll ever look at my other poor little bottles of lacquer the same way again. LOL

  4. I love these posts, especially the comparisons - I invariably end up heading to eBay after reading. Why, oh why didn't I buy TF Sugar Dune at the time?! Susan, London

    1. Hi Susan,
I know it is so exciting hunting discontinued things at eBay, I do it a lot too. It might be very expensive though, so wish you luck. Sugar Dune must be my favorite from their Spring release, I am sure you will love it.

  5. Thank you for confirming that I need these two. I will get both of them (not massai). Not sure about the two other colours. Bar looks like standard black and the pink... I have so many pinks and I don't even like pink much on nails.

    1. Hi Corine.
Massai is permanent so no hurries there. Bar is probably a black creme, which I also like a lot but I will see. These two are the stunners of the collection for me too.

  6. Noooooo Sara!!! I thought I liked you! Don't mention fall please don't! Step away, slowly, very slowly... and go for Wonderland or Pink Tonic! Get back into that summer spirit right this moment!

Joking aside I think I might consider Pied de Poule but I already have Chanel Frenzy and I'm not much into nudes... or am I? Hmm I wonder... :)

    1. LOL Helene, I know what you mean about "Fall". It was so rainy and miserable here but it is sunny again, so I might put on Pink Tonic tonight ;-)

I think Pied-de-Poule and Frenzy are different enough to justify both, I thought Frenzy is cool but according to comparisons, it is rather warm. You may want to acquire a cool neutral taupe that you like ;-) Just saying.

    2. Oh I will have a closer look and may end up getting it if just for the easier application. I've enjoyed Frenzy but the brush is a bit of a pain. :)

  7. And here I was thinking I couldn't justify another nude or blue nail polish purchase... I love the hint of lilac in that nude, my fav nudes are the mushroomy ones that contain a bit of grey and purple. The blue is so stunning! Love a strong dark blue for toes! Thanks for the wonderful review :)

if you like reds, Massai is a stunner!
I don't even like reds that much but I really like that one.

  9. Great swatches! as usual. I am wondering if I really need another nude or blue nail polish in my collection. I think is a sign my collection is starting to being too big when I loose enthusiasm for shades like this. On the other hand, my wallet breathes a little, hihi.

    1. Hi Natalia,
lol yes you have a huge stash and these might not be that special for you. They are pretty nevertheless but you are right, that is great for your wallet ;-))

  10. You've got an amazing collection of nude polishes! I always feel like I need more in my life. I've actually never tried Dior polish, I'm scared once I start I won't be able to stop. These are all such gorgeous shades.

    1. Hi Jenn,
the new Dior formula and the brush are certainly winners. Not being able to stop might be a problem ;-)
