Diorific Vernis #001 Golden Shock, #022 Mirror, #241 Gold Equinoxe, #762 Shock and #990 Smoky from Dior Golden Shock Holiday 2014 Collection, Review, Swatch & Comparison

Dior Holiday Collection Golden Shock is now available in Germany and I believe it started popping up at other countries as well. I went to the counter to play with the items and take a few photos. Since I got a few unpleasant experience with my blind 5 Couleurs orders in terms of linear frosty finish (Femme-Fleur) and panda eye creating fall out (Pied-de-Poule), I don't trust buying the new eye shadow formula from Dior without touching it. So my intention was to swatch and take a few photos for you but instead ended up being ditched by a very unfriendly SA at the counter in Breuninger, but... That is a story for the swatch post.

Today I would like to show you the nail polishes from Golden Shock Collection which really shocked me, why? Keep reading...

Diorific Vernis #001 Golden Shock, #022 Mirror, #241 Gold Equinoxe, #762 Shock and #990 Smoky

Here is the first shock, beautiful in the bottle, #022 Mirror is not only very sheer and shows visible nail line but the formula is also streaky. Below you can see it with three coats. Nothing more to say about this polish, money wasted. (Shock No.1)

Diorific Vernis #022 Mirror

#241 Gold Equinoxe is a beautiful warm gold in the bottle. The color is very unique to my collection so I had to have it. Only today I put it on and have seen the terrible brush strokes and cheap metallic effect. *frowns* Another not that stellar polish from the collection, below it is swatched with two coats, (Shock #2), let's keep searching shall we?

Diorific Vernis #241 Gold Equinoxe

#762 Shock has a good formula. Almost with one coat it has a good coverage, below I applied two coats. My only problem with this one is that it is very close to Diorific #751 Marilyn from last year an the year before that. There is a comparison post at the end of this post for ones who wonder how they compare.

Diorific Vernis #762 Shock

#990 Smoky is an almost black but not yet eggplant color. I love me a good vamp, always but this one was not that spectacular. Especially after last year's Minuit, which I loved so much. Smoky is a cream, nothing special going on in there. Formula is good, below you can see it with 2 coats.

Diorific Vernis #990 Smoky

Then there is the "Golden Shock" Gold Leaf Effect Top Coat in the collection. This one was by far the best piece between the nail polishes. I liked how random the sizes of the golden leaves were and how easy it was to pick them up with a brush and apply them homogeneously on the nail. Below you can see it applied on #990 Smoky.

I also applied it on #241 Gold Equinoxe and liked the resulting effect. In fact Golden Shock saves #241 Gold Equinoxe in a way, make the brush strokes appear less. The resulting mani is pretty, below you can see one coat of Golden Shock over 2 coats of #Gold Equinoxe.

When I was at the counter, I had to check my own post from last year to make sure I was not buying the same shades again since they repromoted Marylin last year and this year the colors were looking so much like the last two years. Below I swatched almost all the Diorific nail polishes for you. Do you see a pattern? A gold, a white, a blackened vamp and a red. This is what they release for the last three years and I was "shocked" to see that this year's collection wasn't changed a bit.

Shock is a tad brighter than Marilyn, Gold Equinoxe is a little warmer than Diorling, Mirror is very close to Winter, just a tad warmer. Smoky is very unspectacular once compared to #995 Minuit from last year and #901 Dive from one year before. (Shock #3,#4, #5....)

Diorific Vernis comparisons: #001 Golden Shock, #022 Mirror, #241 Gold Equinoxe, #762 Shock and #990 Smoky

Final thoughts: I love Diorific nail polishes and I couldn't pass these. Wish I could though since it turned out this year's colors are almost the same with last two years. I started feeling like Dior is cooking the same dinner for us each Christmas. My pick is Golden Shock golden leaf top coat, I think others can be easily skipped, especially if you already own some from last years.

Are you eyeing anything from this collection? Are you also tired of the same packaging/color theme for the third year or is it just me?

  1. I had initially thought a few of them were repromotes. With how wonderful the normal polish line is going, the Diorifics this year underwhelms. Golden Shock looks very similar to what YSL had put out earlier in the year, and Guerlain also launching something similar, kind of not as special as it looks now. It does look layered of Smokey though!

    1. LOL I know I had to check my posts from last year to find out the names and check to make sure that I was not buying the same ones again. You are right about the golden leaves, just it is unique inside the Diorific Vernis line, since all the others are just variations of the colors which are already released. I will get Guerlain golden leaves too and compare them. All I can say is that Guerlain's golden nail polish is prettier than Dior's.

  2. I bought the golden leaf top coat but thought all the others looked too similar to the last two years although I was wondering about going back for Mirror and Equinox. After reading this, I won't. The golden leaf is very hard to remove even by glitter polish standards. Susan, London

    1. Hi Susan,
I think you picked the best one and you can skip the rest without having much doubt. I didn't have problem in removing golden leaves, I used NYC Priti Nail Polish remover since years, have you tried that one yet? It is very different.

  3. Hey Sara, I know what you mean... When I saw the promo image, I wondered for a few seconds if there had been a mistake, because the line-up looks exactly like the one last year (and probably also the year before that). I really wish they'd try something different, because I think people are getting tired of seeing virtually the same thing 3 years in a row! I am still pinning my hope on the 5 Couleurs though. At least Golden Shock looks like something I'd like to wear.

    1. Hi Sunny,
lol I also was like, wait a minute, are these the right promos because they look like the one from last year ;-) I liked 5 Couleurs last year and ended up with both. This year though, I find them a little too frosty, in Femme-Fleur way. Golden Shock is pretty but very dupable in my opinion. You liked Femme-Fleur though, at least more than me, so you might like this years options too. I will be waiting for your review.

  4. Oh I love the gold flake effect :-) But I always avoided glitters because they're just too difficult to take off. Because I'm not so much a nail polish person, the effort is just not worth it. HAHA!

    1. Hahaha Lily, I know what you mean and I am exactly like you! I would classify myself as a nail polish person but I am only ready for that much of effort, taking it off and applying it again 2-3 times a week is enough of effort and it shouldn't be even more ;-)

    1. If you love reds, it is pretty and the formula is good :-)

  6. I just found your blog so forgive me if you posted about this already (haven't had a chance to look around) but have you tried Guerlain's version of the gold leaves this year? I swatched it the other day and loved it, but I must say Dior's bottle is just too gorgeous. If they perform the same I'd probably get Dior's for the bottle alone :)

  7. I purchased Smoky and I liked it a lot, even though it's not a very unique color. But the formula was spectacular, in my opinion, much better than Dior Minuit's. And I think I am going to get Shock as well, because I love a good old fashioned red and I think it's different enough from Marilyn to justify the purchase.

  8. I was so hoping Smoky would be something that I'd want, but after seeing your swatches I'm not buying any. I too am disappointed in their all the same except one color selection. I do still like the little bauble bottles though.

  9. Leider leider leider ist diese Kollektion nichts für mich... Die Lacke gefallen mir wirklich nicht und ich habe mir was anderes gewünscht und von Dior erwartet... Echt schade :-(
Danke für deine tollen Bilder :-****

  10. Very helpful post, especially with the comparison at the end. I seem to prefer previous years to this one. The gold is sooo orange/gold this year, just far too rich looking for me. I prefer the deeper Marilyn than Shock and like you say Minuit has much more interest than Smoky. Mirror looks gorgeous in the swatch, but I don't like how sheer it applies to the nails. I love the gold top coat though, very pretty.
